Privacy Policy
Pelagic is built to work offline, on your phone. Your dive log, wildlife sightings, photos and itineraries never leave your device unless you choose to share them.
In short
We don't collect your data
Pelagic has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. There is no Pelagic server that receives anything from the app.
- No account or sign-in is required to use Pelagic.
- The app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs.
- Everything you enter is stored locally on your device.
- Deleting the app deletes all of its data.
What stays on your device
Your dive log, sightings, photos and itineraries
Logged dives, wildlife sightings, itineraries, the photos you attach to them, and your preferences (theme, units, filters) are stored in the app's private storage on your device. They are included in your normal iOS device backup according to your own iCloud and iTunes backup settings, which Pelagic does not control.
The dive-site catalog, wildlife encyclopedia and marine-event calendar ship inside the app so they are available without a network connection.
Network access
The one thing Pelagic fetches from the internet
When you open a species page, Pelagic can load a short summary and a photo for that species from Wikipedia. To do this it sends the species name to Wikimedia servers. Nothing about you or your log is included in that request, but like any web request it reveals your IP address to Wikimedia. Their handling of that request is covered by the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy. If you are offline the page simply shows the bundled description instead.
Maps are rendered by Apple Maps (MapKit). Map tile requests are made by iOS and are covered by Apple's privacy policy. Pelagic does not request access to your location.
Permissions
Photos
Attaching a photo to a dive or sighting uses the system photo picker, which lets you choose individual images without granting Pelagic access to your whole library. Chosen photos are copied into the app's private storage and removed when you delete the dive or sighting.
This website
pelagic website analytics
This website uses Vercel Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and does not identify individual visitors. The app itself does not use it.
